Tonlos (bowed string)

Tonlos (bowed string)

Tonlos, or airy sound (with no defined pitch), resembles a mix between air and white noise. It produces no notes, only the sound of the bow hair against the instrument.

It is recommended to produce it by damping the strings with a hand and drawing the bow across them without much pressure. It can be performed on the strings or on other parts of the instrument. Playing on the strings is preferred, but using the pegbox or the body of the instrument is also acceptable if the performer finds it more comfortable.

Only for the following instruments:ViolinViolaCelloDouble bass
