Cymbal bowed over the timpani

Cymbal bowed over the timpani

A bowed cymbal on timpani produces a whistling, crystalline sound. It is achieved by bowing the cymbal, turned upside down, on the timpani head.

The sound depends on bow pressure and speed. A graphic indicating a pedal change is sometimes included, since this changes the sound. It should be played close to the rim of the timpani to achieve the intended sound.

(c) Bow - Valer Bispo
