Invisible notehead

Invisible notehead

With invisible noteheads, only the stems are kept so the rhythm can still be read.

When a note repeats the previous one, the notehead is removed to clarify the reading of the score — though sometimes it is kept for clarity. The idea is for the performer to focus on the gesture rather than the note itself (since it is the same note). This notation can also, at times, indicate an approximate pitch.
