Niente
Niente, or nothing, is indicated with a circle at the end of a decrescendo or the beginning of a crescendo. It implies ending or beginning the sounding gesture with no sound.
It is both a gestural and a dynamic indication. The difference from a rest lies in the performer's gesture and attitude: with niente it must remain active. In both cases, there should be no sound.
