Col legno battuto

This technique uses the back (wood, legno) of the bow to strike the strings, producing a dry, percussive sound with a pronounced character.
The term battuto indicates that the bow is used in strikes on the string rather than drawn across it. The technique can be applied with varying degrees of intensity, adjusting the presence of the percussive component.
