Salpicón(2005)
Francisco Blanco "Latino"(1966)
Groove-Big Band
This piece grows out of the distinctive color of the harmonic major scale, whose harmonies inspire a melody with an Andalusian flavor. Its form begins with a free-improvisation introduction that leads into a piano tumbao, the brass ensemble, and the theme itself, structured as A–A.B–A. The solos unfold over different harmonic cycles and are progressively supported by horn backgrounds, with breaks connecting sections that set up the return of the theme and close with an outro that revisits the opening tumbao and a full-orchestra ending.
The piece blends rhythms such as Changuí, pop rumba and Cha Cha, present both in the theme and in the second block of solos and its return. The first solo rests on a rhythm with hip-hop influence, while the third block of solos is driven by Salsa. This mix of rhythmic and sonic colors justifies the title, evoking the variety of ingredients and flavors of southern Spain.
This piece was first recorded on the album "Nuevas Músicas para Big Band – Valencia en Jazz Vol. 2".
