Bernat Cucarella (2001)
Bernat Cucarella Sifre (2001) was born in Alzira and lives in Catarroja (Valencia, Spain). He began studying violin at age 4, later switching to percussion. He continued his classical training while developing an interest in jazz and composition. He completed a performing-arts baccalaureate, higher studies in composition, and a Master's in music technology at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de València, under the guidance of Voro García and Pere Vicalet respectively.
As a composer, his achievements include first prize in the international brass quintet composition competition organized by Spanish Brass at the SBALZ 2023 festival, second prize at the 35th edition of the Jóvenes Compositores Prize 2024 – SGAE CNDM, and the solo-work prize at the European DYCE festival, as well as commissions and collaborations with notable artists.
His works engage with both sonic and visual gesture, maintaining a strong harmonic and rhythmic treatment. Direct influences from big-band music can be heard, along with the use of groove as a generative element of the discourse. Everything he has absorbed about art throughout his training is reflected in the pieces he composes, with staging, electronics and the coexistence of different styles standing out as the elements running through his artistic discourse.
